Adult thrips are tiny narrow bodied insects that vary in colour from yellow to brown / black. They feed by sucking plant sap. Thrips damage plants leaves, flowers and fruit by piercing and sucking out sap. After feeding the plant develops silvery-white mottled residue on the leaves. Thrip damage is more likely to be seen, and cause more damage on, plants grown in greenhouses or conservatories and can be responsible for the spread of viruses. There are many different species including the insect commonly known in the U.K as the 'Thunderbug', the more damaging species for plants are the Western Flower thrip and the Onion thrip. Thrips can be controlled using Yellow or Blue Sticky Traps and two beneficial insects; Amblyseius cucumeris and Orius laevigatus.
